The Wrestler is a film directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Mickey Rourke, Ernest Miller, Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood. Production began in January 2008. The film premiered at the 2008 Venice Film Festival, winning the Golden Lion Award. Fox Searchlight acquired rights to distribute the film in the U.S.,[1][2] and it will be released in a limited capacity on December 17, 2008.

  • Nicolas Cage was originally set to star in the movie. He was seen at a Ring of Honor wrestling event in NYC doing research for the part.
  • The shooting schedule was 35 days.
  • Fox Searchlight bought the North American rights to the film at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival for a reported $4 million.
  • On February 9, 2008, as apart of CZW’s regular February event, filming took place in the New Alhambra Arena for the upcoming movie which included many CZW alumni, along with the Necro Butcher, who will be playing a major part in the film.
  • Reportedly, both Bruce Springsteen and Mickey Rourke were paid no money for their contributions towards the film.
  • Artie Lange revealed on ‘The Howard Stern Show’ that he had auditioned several times for the role of Lenny before ultimately not being cast. Upon recounting this to his friend and former MadTV co-star David Herman, he was reminded that he had once harassed director Darren Aronofsky at a Hollywood party in the mid-nineties. Lange said he did not recall this as he had a cocaine problem at the time.
