Charles Morse is a silver-haired billionaire, and the husband of a much-younger wife, Mickey, a beautiful model. She and an entourage arrange to travel to Alaska for a photo shoot, and persuade Charles to accompany them. They all have seemingly forgotten that it is also Charles’ birthday, until a surprise party reveals that they had not. A hint of trouble comes when Robert Green (Bob), the fashion photographer, plants a quick, albeit public, kiss on the cheek of his model, Charles’ beautiful wife, then she quickly winks affectionately at her onlooking husband, who nonetheless looks troubled by this interaction.

The character of Charles is intellectual yet capable, serene, kind, and assertive. Bob, in contrast, is jovial, cynical, and superficial while pretending to appear that he is not. Charles and Bob, along with their friend Stephen, board a small plane to seek an Indian man whom Bob wants for a model. Flying over a mountainous region of Alaskan wilderness in the small private craft, Bob muses about how difficult it must be to be a rich man from whom others always want something, and who never knows whom to trust. Charles responds that no one should feel sorry for a man who owns a plane, but then he wonders aloud what Bob values in him. Bob responds, “Your style, and your wife,” in a tone that tries to pass it off as a joke. Charles refuses to engage in the subterfuge that the comment was said in jest, and asks Bob calmly how he plans to kill him.

Before Bob has a chance to reply, the plane flies into a flock of geese, disabling the engine, smashing the windshield and injuring the pilot. The plane, out of control, clips a mountain peak, breaking off one of the pontoons, then crashes into a lake. The pilot is dead. Charles uses his birthday knife (given to him by Bob) to cut the jammed seat belt of the drowning Stephen, hauls him up out of the plane, snatching the bag of signal flares along the way, and makes it to the surface with this load, following Bob. They swim to shore, where Charles saves Stephen’s life by performing CPR on him, and Bob finally steps in and assists by hauling the barely conscious Stephen further up a slope to safety.

The expected disagreements begin over how to survive, as each person (except Charles) takes turns having emotional breakdowns. The situations are often ambiguous, however. The first involves the race to avoid hypothermia as they are all in wet clothes and the day is waning. After failing to light a fire using book matches, Bob uses a signal flare over Charles’ mild objection that they will need those for signaling rescue planes. Read more
