Maria is a White farmer who runs (with her husband, his father, and their son) a failing coffee plantation in an unnamed African country in the present day. The film opens in a Montreal apartment, where a con artist named Lisa (Jones) waits for a man to sew bags of heroin into a doll. Lisa takes the doll with her on an airline flight to New York, but when she notices a man spying on her, she becomes worried and gives the doll to a stranger, professional photographer Sam Hendrix (Zimbalist).

Some time later, small-time con artist Mike Talman (Crenna) and his partner Carlino (Weston) arrive for an appointment with Lisa at the below-ground apartment where Sam lives with his wife Susy (Hepburn), who is blind. After leaving their fingerprints in the apartment, they are joined by Lisa’s husband, Harry Roat (Arkin), who has killed her for betraying him and forces them to help him retrieve the doll, which Sam told Lisa he was unable to find.

Later that day, Susy’s neighbor leaves for the weekend, and Sam leaves for a business trip the next morning. Once Susy is alone, the criminals begin an elaborate con game: In order to gain entry into the apartment, Talman poses as a friend of Sam’s, Corlino poses as a policeman, and Roat poses first as an old man and then as the man’s son. By fabricating a story that Sam murdered Lisa after having an affair with her, the men persuade Susy to help them find the doll, which they claim Sam gave to Lisa as a gift. Susy insists that the previous tenant threw away the key to the safe in the living room, and Talman gives her the number for the phone booth across the street as his own after falsely warning her of a police car stationed outside.

During this time, Susy has grown suspicious of Carlino and Roat, and Gloria (Herrod), a girl who lives upstairs, has been going in and out of the apartment to help Susy with her grocery shopping. After Talman leaves, Gloria sneaks into the apartment carrying the doll, which she stole some time earlier. She tells Susy there is no police car outside, and Susy discovers the doll. Wanting to confirm her suspicions about Carlino and Roat, Susy tells Gloria to go home and watch the phone booth. If a man goes into it, Gloria is to phone Susy, let the phone ring twice, and hang up. Gloria tells Susy she can signal her by banging on the pipes. Read more

Where Eagles Dare takes place during World War II. In the winter of 1943-44, U.S. Army Brigadier General George Carnaby, enroute to Crete to rendezvous with Russian forces to plan the final details of the invasion of Normandy, is captured by the Germans when his aircraft is shot down. He is taken to the Schloß Adler (The Castle of the Eagles – hence the story’s title), a fortress high in the Alps above the town of Werfen and the headquarters of the German Secret Service in southern Bavaria. A special team of mainly British commandos is hurriedly assembled and briefed by Colonel Wyatt Turner and Admiral Rolland of MI6, and led by Major John Smith, MC and US Army Ranger Lieutenant Morris Schaffer. Their mission is to parachute into the locality, infiltrate the Schloß Adler, and rescue General Carnaby before the Germans can interrogate him.

Known only to Smith and Rolland, SOE agent Mary Elison, a trusted member of MI6, accompanies the mission. General Carnaby, really an American actor and look-alike by the name of Cartwright Jones, deliberately crash-landed near the castle after a staged attack by Royal Air Force fighters. He must be rescued before the Germans realize that he truly does not know of any secret plans and is not General Carnaby.

During the early hours of the mission, someone begins killing other members of the team and attempting to cover the evidence. Major Smith is unsurprised but shares his secret only with Lt. Schaffer, trustworthy because he has no former connection with MI6.

Contriving to get the entire party captured, Smith and Schaffer, being officers, are separated from Thomas et al., the only three non-officers left alive after the murder of two others. Smith and Schaffer kill their captors, successfully cover the evidence, create a diversion in the town by blowing up the railway station, and make their way to the cable car station that provides the only safe entrance to the castle. When Thomas et al. are brought up to the castle under German guard, Smith and Schaffer silently climb on top of the car and ride to the Schloß Adler with them. Meanwhile, Mary Elison is brought into the castle by Heidi, a top trusted MI6 agent since 1941 disguised as a barmaid in Werfen.
