Three young women meet when they embark on the beginning of their careers. Neely O’Hara (Duke) is a plucky kid with undeniable talent who acts in a Broadway play, the legendary actress Helen Lawson (Hayward) is the star of the play, and Jennifer North (Tate), a beautiful blonde with limited talent, is in the chorus. Anne Welles (Parkins) is a New England ingenue who recently arrived in New York City and works for a theatrical agency that represents Helen Lawson. The three women become fast friends, sharing the bonds of ambition and the tendency to fall in love with the wrong men.

O’Hara becomes a major success and moves to Hollywood to pursue a lucrative film career, but almost immediately falls victim to the eponymous “dolls”: prescription drugs, particularly the barbiturates Seconal and Nembutal and various stimulants. Her career is shattered by her erratic behavior and she is committed to a sanitarium.

Meanwhile, Jennifer follows Neely to Hollywood, where she marries nightclub singer Tony Polar (Scotti) and becomes pregnant. When she learns that he has the hereditary condition Huntington’s chorea, a fact his domineering half-sister and manager Miriam (Grant) had been concealing, Jennifer has an abortion. Faced with Tony’s mounting medical expenses, Jennifer finds herself working in French “art films” (extremely tame soft-core pornography) to pay the bills.

Anne, having become a highly successful model, also falls under the allure of “dolls” to escape her doomed relationship with cad Lyon Burke (Burke), who has an affair with Neely. After Jennifer is diagnosed with breast cancer and told she must have a mastectomy, she commits suicide with an overdose of “dolls”. She could not stand the idea of losing one of her breasts, as they were what got her some fame. Neely is released from the sanitarium and given a chance to resurrect her career, but the attraction of “dolls” and alcohol proves too strong and she spirals into a hellish decline. Read more

Scottie follows Madeleine as she visits the grave, the former home and the museum portrait of a dead woman named Carlotta Valdes. Scottie learns that Carlotta Valdes had a tragic life that ended in suicide and that she was Madeleine’s great-grandmother. After following Madeleine to Fort Point, Scottie sees Madeleine jump into San Francisco Bay. Scottie rescues her and brings her to his home to recover. Madeleine eventually confesses that she feels like she may be going insane and has to repress suicidal impulses. Scottie comforts and reassures her and the intimacy between them grows.

When Madeleine recounts the details of a bad dream, Scottie identifies the setting as Mission San Juan Bautista and brings her there in an effort to ease her anxiety. At the mission, Madeleine suddenly runs into the church and up the staircase of the bell tower. Scottie chases after her, but his acrophobia prevents him from making it to the top of the staircase. Halted on the steps by vertigo and paralyzing fear, Scottie hears a scream and, through a window, sees Madeleine fall from the tower. The manner of her death was officially declared to be suicide and Gavin blamed it on possession by Carlotta Valdes. Read more

Max Renn (James Woods) is the president of CIVIC-TV (Channel 83, Cable 12), a sleazy Toronto UHF television station specializing in sensationalistic programming. Displeased with his station’s current lineup (which mostly consists of softcore pornography), Renn is on a seemingly endless quest for something that isn’t so “soft” and will “break through” to a new audience.

One morning Renn is summoned to the clandestine office of Harlan (Peter Dvorsky), who operates CIVIC-TV’s pirate satellite dish which can pirate broadcasts from as far away as Asia. Harlan shows Renn “Videodrome,” a plotless television show apparently being broadcast out of Malaysia, which depicts the brutal torture and eventual murder of anonymous victims in a bizarre, reddish-orange chamber. Believing this to be the future of television— (staged) snuff TV—Renn orders Harlan to begin pirating the show.

Appearing on a talk show, Renn defends his station’s programming choices to Nikki Brand (Debbie Harry), a sadomasochistic psychiatrist, and Professor Brian O’Blivion (Jack Creley), a pop-culture analyst and philosopher who will only appear on television if his image is broadcast into the studio, onto a television, from a remote location. O’Blivion hijacks the interview and delivers a speech prophesying a future in which television supplants real life.

Renn dates Nikki, who is sexually aroused when Renn shows her an episode of Videodrome and coaxes him into having sex with her while they watch it. Renn goes once again to Harlan’s office, where Harlan informs him the signal delay which caused it to appear to be coming from Malaysia was a ploy by the broadcaster. In fact, Videodrome is being broadcast out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Renn tells Nikki of his discovery and she excitedly goes to Pittsburgh to try and audition for the show.

When Nikki fails to return to Toronto, Renn contacts Masha (Lynne Gorman), a softcore feminist pornographer with long-standing ties to the porn community, and asks her to help him find out the truth about Videodrome. Through Masha, Renn learns that not only is the footage in Videodrome not faked, but Videodrome is the public “face” of a political ideology movement with unspecified but apparently violent goals. The American village of Midwich was invaded by an unseen force which left ten women of the quiet coastal town mysteriously pregnant. Nine months later, the babies were born simultaneously but one was stillborn. At first, they all appeared to be normal, but it doesn’t take the “parents” long to realize that their “children” are anything but normal. As they grew older, the children were shown to have pale skin, platinum-white hair, fierce intellect and steely, cobalt eyes. The emotionless children displayed eerie psychic abilities and remarkable powers, which they used with deadly consequences, unleashing a reign of terror. When they actively used their mind-controlled powers, their irises or their entire eyes glowed in different colours, mostly reddish-orange, but also green, yellow, violet, blue or pure white.

There are some story differences from the earlier adaptation. In this version, the children “paired off”, but one of the children, David, lost his “partner” after she died at birth. As a result, he showed human compassion while still resembling the other children and retaining some degree of psychic powers. As a result, he did not fit in well with the children. Their ruthless leader, Mara (“daughter” of a local doctor, Dr. Alan Chaffee; her mother, Barbara, committed suicide by walking off an ocean cliff), considered him less important due to his expression of emotions. Because of his childhood loss, he understood what the other children did not: pain. He and his mother (the local school principal, Jill McGowan), shared a brief conversation about this, with David understanding that if he feels pain, he can understand others pain also. When the other children experience pain, they simply use their powers to inflict the same pain on the adult responsible for the pain.

Soon the other colonies of psychotic children in foreign countries were eliminated because of their danger. The scientific team at Midwich quickly fled the town to escape the chaos. However, the lead government scientist, Dr. Susan Verner, was killed by the children after being forced to show them David’s “partner”, the baby that was stillborn. Susan had secretly kept it so that she could perform an autopsy on it and study it. A mob of angry townspeople attempted to stop the children, but they used their powers to kill the leader of the mob causing the other townspeople to flee quickly. The State Police and the National Guards were then sent out to kill the children, who instead hypnotized them into shooting each other in a chaotic gun battle. Read more

An abandoned ship crashes into a dockyard in Brooklyn, New York, and the ship inspector, Silas Green, inspects it, finding it full of corpses. Soon after, Maximillian infects Julius with his vampiric blood, turning Julius into a slowly decaying ghoul; he then explains that he has come to Brooklyn in search of the Dhampir daughter of a vampire from his native Caribbean island in order to live beyond the night of the next full moon.

This Dhampir turns out to be Rita Veder, a police detective who is still dealing with the death of her mentally ill mother some months before. Rita begins having strange visions about her (or at least a woman that looks like her), and begins asking questions about her mother’s past. Maximillian initiates a series of sinister methods to find out more about Rita and to further pull her into his thrall, including seducing and murdering her roommate Nikki, disguising himself as her preacher and a lowlife crook. After saving her from being run down by a car, Max gets a dinner date with Rita. While dancing with her, he bites her. Her only hope for remaining human is Maximillian dying berfore the next full moon. Rita eventually drives a stake through his heart, and he disintegrates, turning her back into a normal human. Meanwhile, Julius, now nearly completely decayed and without his master, finds Maximillian’s ring and puts it on. He instantly transforms into a well-dressed (and well-endowed) vampire. Silas agrees to chauffeur Julius, and the two ride off into the night in the limousine. Read more
