Tommy Chong plays Man, a jobless, marijuana smoking drummer who is kicked out of his house by his parents (played by Strother Martin and Edie Adams). Chong’s character’s name is Anthony Stoner, but this is only mentioned once.[1] Man is picked up while hitchhiking by the equally enthusiastic smoker Pedro de Pacas (played by Cheech Marin). They share a large joint, which Chong’s character says is made with “mostly Maui wowie” and Labrador dog feces (the result of his dog having eaten his stash.) Police find their car parked on a traffic median with them in it, discover that they are stoned and arrest them. At trial, the pair are released on a technicality after the judge is discovered to be drinking vodka.

In an attempt to procure some marijuana, they visit Pedro’s cousin Strawberry (played by Tom Skerritt), a Vietnam War veteran. They narrowly escape a police raid on Strawberry’s house because Strawberry has a flashback and thinks the police are the Viet Cong, but are soon deported to Tijuana, by the INS (la migra), along with Pedro’s relatives, who called the INS on themselves, so they could get a free ride to a wedding in Tijuana.

In order to get back to the United States they arrange to pick up a vehicle from Pedro’s uncle’s upholstery shop, but arrive at the wrong address, a disguised marijuana warehouse. They end up unknowingly involved in a plot to smuggle a van constructed completely out of “fiberweed” (hardened marijuana – a play on the word “fiberglass”) from Mexico to Los Angeles, with an inept police narcotics unit hot on their heels. After petitioning the United States government for help, but receiving none, Colonel Rhodes brings together a disparate group of Vietnam War veterans, including some who were a part of Frank’s platoon: Wilkes (Fred Ward), a “tunnel rat” who suffers from PTSD; “Blaster,” a demolitions expert (Reb Brown); and “Sailor,” a mental case with a heart of gold (Randall “Tex” Cobb). Additionally, two helicopter pilots, Distinguished Flying Cross recipient Johnson (Harold Sylvester) and Charts (Tim Thomerson) join the group. Former Marine Kevin Scott (Patrick Swayze) joins the team as the son of a pilot who was shot down in Vietnam and listed as “MIA.”

Claude confronts Daniella, who feels guilty because she is keeping a secret from her husband, only not the one he thinks it is. When she tells him that it’s no big deal, Claude is enraged. The film plays on a characteristic of the American television industry of the 1980s through the time that the film was made. During this period, there was a notable division between programming in the American VHF and UHF television bands. Typically, UHF stations were low-budget operations, with corresponding low broadcast and programming quality, and generally poor reputations to match. Most UHF transmitters were actually translators, used to rebroadcast network stations into rural areas. The remainder were generally LPTV or local stations with limited range and viewers, often carrying PBS, religious, or foreign-language programming. Bob Russell (Garrett M. Brown), his wife Cindy (Elaine Bromka), and their three kids, 8-year old Miles (Macaulay Culkin), 6-year old Maizy (Gaby Hoffman) and 15-year-old Tia (Jean Louisa Kelly), recently moved from Indianapolis to the Chicago area due to a job promotion. Tia resents her parents because she feels everyone was happy enough where they were already living and because she feels that they prefer their jobs to the family.

Bob and Cindy are in bed one night when Cindy’s aunt calls, telling them that Cindy’s father has had a heart attack. Bob and Cindy immediately make plans to go to leave for Indianapolis. Upon being told the news, Tia angrily states that “If my whole family moved away from me, I’d have a heart attack too”, and slams the door in her mother’s face.

Despite trying everyone they know, the parents are unable to find a sitter for the kids. In spite of Cindy’s objections, they are forced to settle on Bob’s brother Buck: an unemployed slacker who lives in a rundown apartment across from Wrigley Field, drives a dilapidated 1978 Mercury Marquis, smokes cigars, spends his free time in bowling alleys, and makes his living by placing large bets and cheating on fixed horse races.

Cindy and Bob leave for Indianapolis, leaving ‘Uncle Buck’ in charge. The loutish but well-meaning and sensitive Buck does the best he can; Miles and Maizy quickly bond with and adore him, but he repeatedly butts heads with the rebellious Tia. He is also dealing with constant pressure of commitment from Chanice Kobolowski (Amy Madigan), his girlfriend for the past eight years.

Buck meets Tia’s boyfriend, Bug (Jay Underwood), and instantly realizes that he is clearly only interested in sex with her. When Buck scares Bug away from her with a hatchet he claimed he wanted to show him (Buck proclaims to be so proficient with the weapon he’s been known to “circumcise a gnat”, saying “Bug…gnat…is there a similarity here? In Los Angeles, Michael Carr (Kurt Russell) and Karen Carr (Madeleine Stowe) are a yuppie couple living in an upscale part of town, and their peace of mind is upset by an intruder coming in through their skylight one night.

The intruder doesn’t take anything except Karen, briefly, as a hostage, before dumping her in the swimming pool and making his escape. The Carrs call in the police, one of whom, Pete Davis (Ray Liotta), takes an interest in the couple’s case. He cuts through department red tape and expedites speedy installation of a security system in the Carrs’ house.

When Michael expresses an interest in getting revenge on the intruder, Pete invites him on a “ridealong” with his partner, Roy Cole (Roger E. Mosley).

After dropping Cole off, Pete takes Michael out to arrest the man who broke into the Carrs’ house, offering Michael a chance to take some revenge, using Pete’s nightstick.

Michael declines, but Pete administers a vicious beating to the intruder, leaving Michael deeply suspicious of Pete’s mental stability. He suggests that Pete should get some professional help and, especially, stay far away from him and Karen in the future.

But Pete takes neither suggestion, instead beginning to prey on the couple, and in particular, on Karen, with whom he’s obsessed. Pete even appears in the couple’s bedroom one night while they are making love, just to “check that everything’s O.K.”

When Michael files a complaint against Pete’s unwanted attentions, Pete uses his police connections to destroy Michael’s business reputation. Encountering bemused apathy from Pete’s superiors in the LAPD, Michael turns to Cole, (who orders his partner to cease his obsessing, see a shrink or face suspension) — whom Pete then murders (blaming it on a known criminal). And then Pete frames Michael on drug charges by planting a high supply of cocaine in Michael’s and Karen’s house, leaving the way clear for Pete to move in on Karen. Read more
