Siblings Barbra (Judith O’Dea) and Johnny (Russell Streiner) drive to a rural Pennsylvania cemetery to place a cross with flowers on their father’s grave. Johnny teases his sister, who is afraid of cemeteries, taunting, “They’re coming to get you, Barbra!” Suddenly, a pale skinned man (S. William Hinzman) grabs Barbra and Johnny rushes to save her. A fight occurs, but Johnny is able to push the man to the ground, but he gets up and Johnny is killed when he falls and smashes his head into a tombstone. Barbra flees into the car, but the man chases her. Barbra attempts to flee in the car as the zombie attempts to break in, but she does not have the key. She releases the emergency brake, and the car rolls away from the man. Barbra soon crashes into a tree, then abandons the car and escapes into a nearby farmhouse to hide, still chased by the zombie. She soon finds, however, that others like the man are outside. While exploring the empty house, Barbra discovers a hideously mutilated corpse at the top of the stairs.

While attempting to flee the house, she encounters Ben (Duane Jones), who arrives in a pickup truck and defends the house against another pack of zombies. After subduing the pack, Ben sets the bodies on fire, scaring off the remaining zombies. Inside the house, Ben fights off another zombie that emerges from a side room. This is followed by an intense argument about Barbra’s desire to search for Johnny. After a brief struggle, Barbra collapses in shock, and Ben carries her to a couch. Ben boards up the doors and windows from the inside, and takes a chair outside and scares off the attackers by setting it afire. Ben finds a rifle and a radio as Barbra lies catatonic.

The two are unaware that Harry and Helen Cooper (Karl Hardman and Marilyn Eastman), their daughter Karen (Kyra Schon), and young couple Tom (Keith Wayne) and Judy (Judith Ridley) have been hiding in the cellar until later. One of the attackers bit Karen earlier and she has fallen ill. Harry wants the group to barricade themselves in the cellar, but Ben argues that they would effectively be trapping themselves. Ben carries the argument, and the group cooperates to reinforce the main part of the house. Read more

Lucas Marsh, an intern bent upon becoming a first-class doctor, not merely a successful one. He courts and marries the warm-hearted Kristina, not out of love but because she is highly knowledgeable in the skills of the operating room and because she has frugally put aside her savings through the years. She will be, as he shrewdly knows, a supportive wife in every way. She helps make him the success he wants to be and cheerfully moves with him to the small town in which he starts his practice. But as much as he tries to be a good husband to the undemanding Kristina, Marsh easily falls into the arms of a local siren and the patience of the long-sorrowing Kristina wears thin. She reasons he no longer needs her and asks for a divorce. A calamity now brings Marsh to his senses. Dr. Runkleman, Marsh’s gruff and wise employer, is stricken with a heart attack and requires emergency surgery. Marsh is forced to operate.

On the way to meet his former boss, railroad tycoon Ben Kimball (Jay C. Flippen), Grant McLaine (James Stewart) rescues a young boy, Joey Adams (Brandon De Wilde), from Concho (Robert J. Wilke). Ben informs Grant that his payroll has been robbed several times already by a gang led by Whitey Harbin (Dan Duryea) and the Utica Kid (Audie Murphy). If Ben’s workers don’t get paid soon, they will all leave. Grant accepts the job of taking $10,000 to them by train.

When the train is held up again, Grant hides the money in a shoebox carried by Joey. The ploy works, but the young boy turns out to be friends with the Utica Kid, who takes him along with him. When the robbers cannot find the money, they take Ben’s wife Verna (Elaine Stewart) to hold for ransom. Concho, a member of the gang, knocks out Grant for revenge, and the train leaves without him.

When Grant wakes up, he trails the gang to a ghost town. He boldly asks to join up, revealing that he is the Kid’s older brother [interestingly, the Kid's given name is Lee]. Utica is suspicious of his heretofore honest sibling, so Whitey (who dislikes the Kid) accepts him. Concho tries to shoot Grant unexpectedly, but Grant is faster to the draw. Afterwards, he tells the Kid where the money is, in an attempt to reform his brother. It doesn’t work. The Kid gives Grant ten minutes to leave before he tells the gang, but Grant calls his bluff.

Then, railroad employee Will Renner (Herbert Anderson) shows up to collect his share of the loot. He had been Whitey’s informer. He recognizes Grant (by the song he sings and plays on his accordion) as the man assigned to deliver the payroll, and a gunfight ensues. Grant, Verna and Charlotte “Charlie” Drew (Dianne Foster), the Kid’s girlfriend, are pinned down in a building. Grant sends Verna to safety in a tram, but Charlie refuses to leave. Meanwhile, the Kid is planning to quietly leave with Joey and the money. Read more

North to Alaska was the first in a three-film contract for Wayne with 20th Century Fox. Alaska having become the 49th State in 1959, the location was much discussed by the average American at the time. The film’s working title was Trail of the Yukon, the first choice of director by Wayne and Fox was Richard Fleischer. However, Fleischer attempted to bow out, disliking the script and fearing he would be blamed for a Wayne box office failure. Fleischer falsely blamed the female lead Capucine for his displeasure, knowing that Capucine’s lover, the agent and producer Charles K. Feldman (whom Fleischer felt to have undue influence at Fox), would ask that he be replaced. Spyros Skouras wanted the budget of the film reduced; that Hathaway did by reducing location shots.

Most of the film was shot in Point Mugu California, not Alaska, although the landscape is evocative of old Nome and the gold fields northeast of there. (Alaska’s gold rush should not be confused with the more famous Klondike rush of Canada; the Nome gold fever began in 1899 as Klondike’s was waning; many Klondikers rushed to Nome and prospectors worked the gold-rich beach sand where passengers arrived via barge-style ferries. John Wayne’s gold workings would have been inland but the exact location is never stated). The town of Nome as pictured in the film, circa 1900, was similar in appearance though not a perfect replica. Without docks due to variable tides, settlers and prospectors were ferried ashore as shown. The Wayne and Granger “honeymoon” cabin scenes were filmed along steaming Hot Creek near volcanic Mammoth Mountain. Mt. Morrison appears in the background of many shots.

A good account of life in the Nome gold camp, as seen in “North to Alaska” between 1899 and 1901, is “Fool’s Gold” (out-of-print), a book penned by saloonkeeper Jed Johnson. He owned Nome’s notorious Ophir Saloon. Read more

Howard Beale, the longtime anchor of the UBS Evening News, learns he has just two more weeks on the air because of declining ratings. The following night, he announces on live television that he will commit suicide by shooting himself in the head during next Tuesday’s broadcast. UBS fires him after this incident, but—after some persuasion from UBS News’ old guard president and Beale’s best friend, Max Schumacher—lets him back on the air, ostensibly for a dignified farewell. Beale promises he will apologize for his outburst. However, once on the air, he launches into a rant claiming that life is “bullshit”. Beale’s outburst causes the newscast’s ratings to soar.

Much to Schumacher’s dismay, the upper echelons of UBS decide to exploit Beale’s antics rather than pulling him off the air. In one impassioned diatribe, Beale galvanizes the nation with his rant, “I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!” and persuades Americans to shout out their windows during a lightning storm. Soon Beale is hosting a new program called The Howard Beale Show, top-billed as a “mad prophet.” Ultimately, the show becomes the highest rated program on television, and Beale finds new celebrity preaching his angry message in front of a live studio audience that, on cue, chants Beale’s signature catchphrase en masse: “We’re as mad as hell, and we’re not going to take this anymore.”

Beginning as a producer of entertainment programming, Diana Christensen’s desire to produce a hit show for the network results in her cutting a deal with a group of radical left-wing terrorists (a parody of the Symbionese Liberation Army, called the “Ecumenical Liberation Army”) who film themselves robbing banks, footage to be used as the cold-opening for a new series based on terrorists for the network that she wants developed for the upcoming fall season. When Beale’s nervous breakdown-fueled rants bring in high ratings, Christensen approaches Schumacher and offers to help him “develop” the show. He says no to the professional offer, but not to the personal one, and the two begin an affair. When Schumacher decides to end the “Howard as Angry Man” format, Christensen convinces her boss Frank Hackett to slot the evening news show under the entertainment division so she can produce it; Hackett fires Schumacher at the same time. The romance withers as the show flourishes, but in the flush of high ratings, the two ultimately find their ways back together, leading to Schumacher leaving his wife of over 25 years for Christensen. But Christensen’s fanatical devotion to her job and emotional emptiness ultimately drives Max back to his wife, warning his former lover that she will self-destruct at the pace she was running with her career. “You are television incarnate, Diana,” he tells her, “indifferent to suffering, insensitive to joy. All of life is reduced to the common rubble of banality.” Read more
