When 11, Chinese boy Li, living in a mountain village, is selected for a ballet education. On a visit to China ballet director Ben Stevenson is impressed by Li’s talent and offers him a three-month stay in the US as an exchange student of his ballet school. Li and the Chinese authorities accept.

After the three months Li and Stevenson like an extension, but the Chinese authorities do not permit this. Li seeks a way to be allowed to stay anyway, because he likes the US and because he is in love. He does not want to defect because of the problems that would cause to his family. and to Stevenson’s relationship with China. He rushes his marriage after being told that China respects international marriage law. He visits the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Houston with his wife, his lawyer and Stevenson, to report his marriage and that he will stay in the US. He is detained, but released after 21 hours and high-level negotiations. He is free to stay in the US but not allowed to ever visit China anymore.

Li is unable to contact his parents and worries about their well-being. After five years, as a surprise, their visit to the US is arranged. They see his performance, at the end of which they reunite with him on stage. Three years later Li gets permission after all to visit China, together with his second wife (he had divorced from his first wife). In the village of his youth, where his parents still live, apart from meeting his parents again, he meets his brothers and former teacher, and gives a little outdoor ballet performance with his wife, who is also a dancer. The film begins with Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews) perched on a cloud high above London in Spring 1910. (Mr. Banks’ introductory song “The Life I Lead” contains the lyrics: “It’s 1910″…”King Edward’s on the throne”… Edward VII died on 6 May 1910.) The action descends to earth where Bert (Dick Van Dyke), a Cockney jack-of-all-trades is performing as a one-man band at a park entrance, where he suddenly senses that his good friend is about to return. After the show, he breaks the “Fourth wall” and introduces the audience to the well-to-do but troubled Banks family, headed by the cold and aloof Mr. Banks (David Tomlinson) and the loving but highly distracted suffragette Mrs. Banks (Glynis Johns).

The Banks’ latest nanny, Katie Nanna (Elsa Lanchester), quits out of exasperation after the Banks children, Jane (Karen Dotrice) and Michael (Matthew Garber) run off in pursuit of a wayward kite. Mr. Banks returns home from his job at a bank, and Mrs. Banks reveals the children are missing. A policeman arrives with the children, who ask their father to help repair their damaged kite, but he dismisses them and advertises for an authoritarian nanny-replacement. Jane and Michael draft their own advertisement asking for a fun, kind-hearted and caring person, but Mr. Banks tears up the paper and throws it in the fireplace. Unnoticed, the note’s remains float up the chimney.

The next day there is a queue of old and disagreeable nanny candidates waiting at the door. However, a strong gust of wind literally blows the queue away, and Mary Poppins floats down with her umbrella to apply. Mr. Banks is stunned to see that this calmly defiant new nanny has responded to the children’s ad despite the fact he destroyed it. As he puzzles, Mary Poppins employs herself and begins work. In New York City’s Spanish Harlem, police detectives Dan Madigan and Rocco Bonaro break into a sleazy apartment and arrest Barney Benesch, a hoodlum wanted for questioning by a Brooklyn precinct. Momentarily distracted by the suspect’s nude girl friend, the two detectives are outwitted by Benesch, who escapes with their guns.

When it is discovered that Benesch was wanted for homicide, Madigan and Bonaro are reprimanded by Police Commissioner Anthony X. Russell. Aside from this new problem, Russell is troubled by other matters: his married mistress, Tricia Bentley, has decided to end their relationship; a black minister, Dr. Taylor, is claiming that his teenaged son was subjected to brutality by racist policemen; and proof has been established that Russell’s longtime friend and associate, Chief Inspector Kane, has accepted a bribe to protect a hangout for prostitutes.

Irritated by the fact that Madigan and Bonaro broke the rules by working for another precinct, Russell gives the two men 72 hours to arrest Benesch. Despite the deadline, Madigan tries to spend some time with his wife, Julia, who is socially and sexually frustrated as a result of her husband’s dangerous and time-consuming job.

The commissioner confronts Kane with the bribe evidence. The inspector was trying to help his son out of a jam. He offers to turn in his badge but resents Russell’s outrage at how he could have done such a thing, asking the commissioner what he would know about being a father.

Benesch shoots two policemen with Madigan’s gun. The detectives finally get a lead through bookie Midget Castiglione, who puts them in touch with Hughie, one of Benesch’s pimps. Tracing the fugitive to a Spanish Harlem apartment, Madigan and Bonaro bring in a police cordon and order the killer to surrender. When he refuses, the two detectives rush the building and break down the door. In the exchange of gunfire, Madigan is fatally wounded before Bonaro can kill Benesch. Read more
