The film depicts the inside of a tank, and the view from inside through the gunsight (every change in the horizontal and vertical viewing direction is accompanied by the hydraulic whine of the traversing gun turret). There are four Israeli soldiers inside: the driver in the tank’s hull, and the loader, the gunner and the commander in the turret. Part of the time, there is also the body of a dead Israeli soldier (kept there until it is taken away by helicopter), a Syrian POW, a visiting higher officer, and a visiting Phalangist (Christian Arab allied with Israel) who threatens the POW.

The duty of the soldiers is to clear a Lebanese area of hostile fighters. They are instructed to use phosphorus grenades that are forbidden by international treaty, but to use a code word for them, to conceal their use.

The gunner has never fired the tank’s cannon in a war situation, and is hesitant at first. As a result, a fellow Israeli soldier is killed. The soldiers have to cope with the deteriorating state of the tank, the heat, bad atmosphere and small space inside, occasional failure of the communication equipment, navigational problems, and mutual quarrels. The plot revolves around the three sisters of Happiness: Trish (Janney), Joy (Henderson), and Helen (Ally Sheedy).

Trish has been raising her three children, Billy (now off at college), Timmy and Chloe. She has begun dating Harvey (Michael Lerner), who she hopes is normal. Trish’s ex-husband and pedophile, Bill (Ciarán Hinds) has been released from prison and heads to Florida to find out how his family, particularly his eldest son, are doing. Trish’s middle child, Timmy, is preparing for his bar mitzvah and trying to determine what it means to become a man. For long Trish has made Timmy and Chloe believe that Bill had died, to avoid telling them that he is pedophile and in prison. Timmy finds out and is angry at her that she lied to him. However, he agrees that he would not want to have anything inside him. Trish urges him to scream as soon as anyone touches him.

Meanwhile, Joy takes a break from her husband Allen, a rehabilitating criminal, and heads to Florida to spend time with Trish. She begins having visions of her previous boyfriend, Andy (Paul Reubens), who had committed suicide. She briefly visits her other sister Helen in California, but returns to Florida. Allen commits suicide and later appears to Joy during Timmy’s bar mitzvah. He blames her and entices her to commit suicide as well, but she relents.

In the meantime, Bill has snuck into Trish’s house to find his eldest son Billy’s college address. He pays Billy an unexpected visit, where they discuss their past and the time that passed while Bill was in prison. Harvey brings his adult son, and Trish and Harvey introduce their children to each other over dinner. At Timmy’s request Harvey comes to Timmy’s room, to have a talk. Timmy asks Harvey whether he is gay or a pedophile. Harvey denies, and tries to comfort Timmy, touching his shoulder. This upsets Timmy, and Harvey hugs him to comfort him more. This upsets Timmy even more and he starts to scream. Trish believes that Harvey is also a pedophile and breaks up with him. Timmy has his bar mitzvah and leaves the reception to find Harvey and his adult son; he apologizes to the son saying Harvey was not a pedophile and neither was his father. Read more

Eric Bishop is a football fanatic postman whose life is descending into crisis. Looking after his granddaughter is bringing him into contact with his ex-wife, Lily, who he abandoned after the birth of their child. At the same time, his son Ryan is hiding a gun under the floorboards of his bedroom for a gangster. At his weakest moments Bishop considers suicide. But after a short meditation session with fellow postmen in his room, hallucinations bring forth visits from his footballing hero, the famously philosophical Eric Cantona, who gives him advice. His relationship with Lily improves dramatically. Bishop finds the gun and confronts his son. Ryan admits to his involvement with gangsters, and Bishop takes the gun back to the gangster. He is forced to keep it himself, however, when a Rottweiler is set on him in his car. The gangster then posts film of Bishop’s humiliation in Youtube. The entire family is then arrested by the Police on a tip-off, but they fail to find the gun. Eric Cantona then advises Bishop to talk to his friends and to ‘surprise’ himself. Bishop organises ‘Operation Cantona’, sneaking dozens of fellow Manchester United fans into the gangster’s house and humiliating him and his family, threatening to put the video of their operation onto Youtube, in turn.
