In the pre-title sequence, James Bond (Sean Connery) infiltrates a Mexican drug lord’s base by water wearing a dry suit with a snorkel camouflaged as a seagull. He destroys a hidden building with plastic explosives and electrocutes an assassin in a bathtub.

The main story begins in Miami Beach, Florida, at the Fontainebleau Hotel with Central Intelligence Agency agent Felix Leiter (Cec Linder) delivering a message to Bond from M to watch Auric Goldfinger (Gert Fröbe). Bond foils Goldfinger’s cheating at gin rummy by distracting his employee, Jill Masterson (Shirley Eaton). After blackmailing Goldfinger into losing, Bond and Jill consummate their new relationship in Bond’s hotel suite.

Following an unflattering remark concerning The Beatles (the entire production was filmed and released during the height of Beatlemania), Bond is knocked out by Goldfinger’s Korean manservant Oddjob (Harold Sakata), who then covers Jill in gold paint, supposedly killing her by epidermal suffocation.

In London, Bond learns that his true mission is determining how Goldfinger transports gold internationally. Prior to his assignment he is issued an Aston Martin DB5 from Q modified with several gadgets, including an ejector seat much to Bonds amusement, but is later used during a chase scene. He plays and wins a high-stakes golf game against Goldfinger with a recovered Nazi gold bar at stake.

Goldfinger, who was caught cheating during the game, warns Bond to stay out of his business by having Oddjob decapitate a statue by throwing his steel-rimmed top hat. Undeterred, Bond follows him to Switzerland, where he unintentionally foils an assassination attempt on Goldfinger by Tilly Masterson (Tania Mallet) to avenge the death of her sister, Jill. Fall-Winter 1937. For nearly thirty years, German businessman John Rabe and his wife Dora have resided in Nanking, the Chinese capital of that time. He is the director of the Siemens subsidiary there. The thought of transferring management to his successor Fließ and returning to Berlin is a burden for him. He has grown fond of the country and he knows he is a man of influence there; in the Berlin headquarters he would be just be one of many. During the farewell ball in his honor, Nanking is bombarded by planes of the Japanese forces, which have just conquered Shanghai. Panic breaks out and Rabe has the company gates opened to bring the families of his workers into safety. In a key scene, the people draw a large Nazi flag over their heads; stopping the fighter-bombers from causing more harm. (Germany was in the process of shifting its alliance from China to Japan in those years.)

While the fires are being put out the next morning and the damages are inspected, the remaining foreigners in the city discuss what they can do in the face of the threat. Dr. Rosen, a German diplomat of Jewish background, reports about Shanghai where a safety zone was established for civilians. Valérie Dupres, director of the International Girls College, is enthused and nominates John Rabe, as a German in a way an “ally” of the Japanese, as the chairman of the international committee. This meets though with the initial reluctance of Dr. Robert O. Wilson, head doctor of a local hospital, who harbors great antipathy towards the “Nazi” Rabe. Rabe actually wanted to start his homebound journey the next day. However, just as he and Dora are about to board the passenger liner packed with the fleeing diplomatic corps, she looks into his eyes and sees that he intends to stay after all. Rabe then witnesses an aerial attack on the ship as it sails out, severely damaging it. He becomes greatly depressed, but then dives into the task of organizing a safety zone.

Meanwhile, Japanese forces have captured many National Revolutionary Army soldiers during a battle outside of Nanking. Prince Yasuhiko Asaka orders the prisoners to be massacred. A young major cautiously voices his apprehension about this crime, but is reprimanded. Nanking is then brutally overrun. John Rabe and the international committee however manage to have the Nanking Safety Zone recognized by the Japanese authorities. Hundreds of thousands seek refuge; more than anticipated and overstretching the committee’s resources. Chinese soldiers are officially not permitted in. When a wounded soldier is carried in, as an exception because he is the son of one of the doctors, Dr. Wilson reluctantly accepts this. However, a Japanese squad searches him out and shoots him along with some hospital staff, much to the horror of Dr. Wilson. Read more

Naive American engineer Howard Graham (Joseph Cotten) is taken by a fellow employee to an Istanbul nightclub, where he becomes attracted to dancer Josette Martel (Dolores del Río). An attempt to murder him results in the death of an unfortunate magician instead. When Colonel Haki (Orson Welles) of the Turkish police investigates, he discovers that Graham is vital to the upgrading of the Turkish navy and that the Nazis have assigned Peter Banat (Jack Moss) to dispose of him.

Haki arranges a supposedly secret passage for Graham on a tramp steamer. Among his fellow passengers are Josette and her partner Gogo Martel (Jack Durant) … and Banat. Unable to convince the captain to turn around, Graham is trapped aboard the ship, not knowing whom he can trust.

At the end of the journey, Banat and his confederates take Graham away in a car. Fortunately, a flat tire forces a stop in a crowded street, and Graham is able to escape. He makes his way to the hotel where his wife Stephanie (Ruth Warrick) is staying, only to find his enemies also waiting there. Graham escapes once more, aided by the unexpected arrival of Martel (looking to extract money from him in return for Josette’s favors). A chase ensues. Colonel Haki makes a timely appearance and engages in a gunfight with Banat. After Haki is wounded, Graham goes out on the ledge of the building after Banat during a rainstorm. When his ammunition runs out, Banat tries to knock Graham off the ledge and falls to his death. Read more
