At 32 years old, Gilbert was educated, had a home and a husband, and a successful career as a writer. However, she was unhappy in her marriage and often spent the night crying on her bathroom floor. She separated from her husband and initiated a divorce, which her husband contested. She entered into a relationship with another man, but this relationship did not work out either. While writing an article on yoga vacations in Bali, she met a seventh-generation medicine man who told her she would come back and study with him. The protagonists are two bike-riding drug dealers: Wyatt, nicknamed ‘Captain America’ (Fonda), and Billy (Hopper). Fonda and Hopper have said that these characters’ names refer to Wyatt Earp and Billy the Kid.[citation needed] Wyatt dresses in American flag-adorned leather, while Billy dresses in Native American-style buckskin pants and shirts and a bushman hat.

After smuggling cocaine from Mexico to Los Angeles, Wyatt and Billy sell their contraband to “Connection,” a man (played by Phil Spector) in a Rolls-Royce. With the money from the sale stuffed into a plastic tube hidden inside the Stars & Stripes-adorned fuel tank of Wyatt’s California-style chopper, they ride eastward in an attempt to reach New Orleans, Louisiana, in time for Mardi Gras.

During their trip, Wyatt and Billy meet and have a meal with a rancher, whom Wyatt compliments for his ability to provide for his large family. Later, the duo pick up a hitch-hiker (Luke Askew) and agree to take him to his commune, where they stay for a day. Life in the commune appears to be hard, with hippies from the city finding it difficult to grow their own crops in a dry climate with poor soil. (One of the children seen in the commune is played by Fonda’s four-year-old daughter Bridget.) At one point, the bikers witness a prayer for blessing of the new crop, as put by a communard: A chance “to make a stand,” and to plant “simple food, for our simple taste.” The commune is also host to a traveling theater group that “sings for its supper” (performs for food). The notion of “free love” appears to be practiced, with two women seemingly sharing the affections of the hitch-hiking communard, and who then turn their attention to Wyatt and Billy. As the bikers leave, the hitch-hiker (known only as “Stranger on highway” in the credits) gives Wyatt some LSD for him to share with “the right people.” Read more

The story is set in 1917, during World War I, in the central California coastal towns of Monterey and Salinas. Cal (Caleb) (James Dean) and Aron (Richard Davalos) are the young adult sons of a modestly successful farmer and wartime draft board chairman named Adam Trask (Raymond Massey). Adam is a deeply religious man. Cal is moody and embittered by his belief that his father loves only Aron.

The Trask family has a farm in the fertile Salinas valley. Although both Cal and Aron had long been led to believe that their mother had died “and gone to heaven”, the opening scene reveals that Cal has apparently come to realize that his mother is still alive, owning and running a successful brothel in nearby Monterey.

After the father’s idealistic plans for a long-haul vegetable shipping business venture end in a loss of thousands of dollars, Cal decides to enter the bean-growing business, as a way of recouping the money his father lost in the vegetable shipping venture. He knows that if the United States enters the war, the price of beans will skyrocket. Cal hopes this will finally earn him the love and respect of his father. He goes to his mother Kate (Jo Van Fleet) to ask to borrow the capital he needs. She reluctantly lends him the five thousand dollars (approximately $85,000 in 2008′s currency) . Read more

The film is set in 1956, a year before the first satellite, Sputnik I, orbited the earth. “Project Skyhook,” a U.S. effort to launch a dozen satellites, is visited by a flying saucer. A misunderstanding leads to the aliens being fired on, and they retaliate by destroying the project site, killing everyone except the two principal characters, Dr. and Mrs. Marvin (a scientist and his wife/secretary). The sequence of events quickly spirals out of control and leads to a full scale invasion. Flying saucers attack Washington, D.C., Paris, London and Moscow. In the end, the alien saucers are defeated over the skies of Washington by a device using high-power sound coupled with an electric field that stops the saucers’ propulsion systems. Read more

The preceding film, Beneath the Planet of the Apes, ends with a nuclear weapon’s destruction of all life on the apes’ future Earth.

Escape from the Planet of the Apes begins by establishing that three apes (Cornelius, Zira, and Dr. Milo, played respectively by Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, and Sal Mineo) escaped the Earth’s destruction. They have managed this by salvaging and repairing the astronaut Taylor’s spaceship (which sank in the first movie) and piloting it through the shock wave of Earth’s destruction, sending the ship through a time warp back to 1973.

The apes arrive on Earth, splashing down on the Pacific coast. They are transported to a secluded area of the Los Angeles Zoo, under the observation of two scientists, Stephanie (Natalie Trundy) and Lewis (Bradford Dillman). The apes’ power of speech is revealed when Zira’s impatience gets the better of her during an experiment. Soon after this, Milo is killed by a gorilla who was agitated by an argument between the three chimpanzees. (Kim Hunter later said that Sal Mineo was happy to be killed off so early in the film because he hated the makeup process and was glad to be done with it.)

Meanwhile, a Presidential Commission has been formed to investigate the return of Taylor’s spaceship and how the apes, which they already are aware are atypically intelligent, came to be aboard it. The apes are brought before the Presidential Commission, where they publicly reveal their ability to speak, and are welcomed as guests.

The apes become celebrities, being lavished with presents and media attention. They come to the attention of a scientist, futuristic consultant Dr. Otto Hasslein (Eric Braeden), who discovers Zira is pregnant and fears for the future of the human race. Determined to force the issue, he gets her drunk on wine (which he assures her is harmless, calling it “grape juice plus”). The resulting interrogation enables him to convince the Commission that Cornelius and Zira must be subjected to more rigorous questioning. Read more

The movie centers upon the brother and sister pair Tony and Tia, who initially know only their deceased adoptive parents’ surname, Malone. The children are placed in an orphanage, where they face difficulties stemming from their strange psychic powers; Tony can telekinetically move objects with the aid of his harmonica, while Tia can communicate telepathically to Tony, commune with animals, experiences premonitions, and can also use minor telekinetic powers. She carries a “star case” with her at all times, which the children find contains a strange map.

Tia has fragmented memories of her early childhood, including an accident at sea and a man she later remembers as the children’s Uncle Bené (pronounced Ben-ay), whom they believe drowned during their rescue.

During a field trip to see a movie, Tia experiences a premonition and is able to warn wealthy attorney Lucas Deranian against a potentially dangerous accident. Deranian informs his employer, millionaire Aristotle Bolt, of the children’s powers. Bolt, obsessed with the paranormal, demands that Deranian retrieve the children at all costs. Deranian’s detective work leads him to the orphanage, where he poses as Tia and Tony’s uncle, though not under the name Bené, and takes them to Bolt’s mansion.

Though initially suspicious of Bolt’s motives, Tia and Tony are lured in by the wealthy trappings of Bolt’s home. Bolt eventually reveals that he has been monitoring the children via a closed-circuit television system and that he and Deranian are fully aware of their powers. The night of this revelation, Tia and Tony make an escape, making use of their powers to control a wild mustang, guard dogs, and the security fence.

Bolt sends Deranian and a thug, Ubermann, after the children. Tia and Tony hide out in a Winnebago owned by a crotchety widower named Jason O’Day. Initially negative towards the children, Jason gradually begins to recognize their powers and the truth of their story; Tia’s vague memories of a disaster at sea intrigue him. He agrees to take the children on the route indicated by Tia’s star case, which leads them to a mountain known as Witch Mountain, home to unexplainable phenomena. Avoiding Bolt, the law and an incited mob convinced the children are witches, they eventually make their way up Witch Mountain, pursued by Deranian and Ubermann as well as Bolt in a helicopter. Lee is a Shaolin martial artist from Hong Kong who possesses great philosophical insight into martial arts as well as physical prowess. He receives an invitation to a martial arts competition on an island organised by the mysterious Han. Lee learns from his Sifu (master) that Han was also once a Shaolin student, but had been expelled from their order for abusing their code of conduct.

A man called Braithwaite from an international intelligence organization approaches Lee and asks for his help in an undercover mission. Han is suspected to be involved in illegal drugs and prostitution dealings, but since part of Han’s island is beyond international jurisdiction, they are unable to conduct any formal investigations. Han runs a martial arts school on his island to recruit talents to serve him and tests a secret drug formula on his servant girls, as well as holding his tournament every three years. Lee is the ideal candidate for the mission as his fighting skills are valuable since Han disallows firearms on the island. Before leaving, Lee learns from his father that Han’s henchman O’Hara had caused the death of his elder sister years ago.

Lee arrives on Han’s island and receives a warm reception. Joining him are other competitors – Roper, a white American playboy-gambler on the run from the mob; Williams, a black American activist on the run from the law after fighting two white policemen in Los Angeles. Roper and Williams defeat their respective opponents in the competition held the following morning. That night, Lee begins searching the island for evidence and finds a secret entrance to an underground base. He runs into Han’s guards but manages to take them down before they could identify him. He is seen by Williams, who is taking a stroll, and Williams is seen by a guard and reported to Han.

The next day, Han warns the competitors about wandering out of their rooms at night. He punishes his guards for failure in their duties and the guards meet their horrible ends at the hands of the sadistic Bolo, Han’s chief bodyguard. Moments later, Lee is called to his first match and his opponent turns out to be O’Hara. Lee defeats O’Hara and is forced to kill him after O’Hara attempts to attack him using broken glass bottles. Han is disgraced by O’Hara’s dishonourable actions and calls it a day. He asks Williams to meet him later and accuses Williams of attacking his guards the previous night. Williams denies it and Han kills him after a brief fight. Read more

It chronicles the story of Frank Morris (Eastwood) and brothers John (Ward) and Clarence Anglin (Jack Thibeau), who have the distinction of being possibly the only people to ever escape from the Alcatraz prison.

A cold, atmospheric thriller, the film captures many of the difficulties of prison life and the conditions of Alcatraz prison before it was closed down permanently, shortly after the escape.

There is some hint at the end of the film that the escape was successful, but in fact it remains a mystery as to whether the escapees succeeded or not. Read more
