A married couple and their three children, an elder son and two daughters, live at the outskirts of a city, in a big house with a large garden and swimming pool. There is a fence that surrounds the property and the children have never been on the other side of it. The children are cut-off from the outside world. They are tricked into believing that the airplanes that fly overhead fall to the ground as toys, and that several everyday words, particularly those that refer to events or objects off-limits, have a different meaning: for example, “zombie” refers to a small yellow flower, “sea” refers to a sofa and “telephone” to the salt cellar. They’re also led to believe that they will be physically capable of venturing into the outside world only when one of their dogteeth falls out.

The only non-family member to come into the house, is a young woman called Christina. She works as a security guard at the same company the father is employed at. He arranges for her to visit the house, to satisfy the sexual urges of the son. After a visit when the son is unable to perform sexually with Christina, she makes an advance on the eldest daughter. Christina asks her to perform oral sex on her in return for a headband.

Christina makes another visit to the house and wants the eldest daughter to perform oral sex on her again. This time instead of a headband, she wants the two films in Christina’s bag (Rocky and Jaws). Initially Christina refuses, but eventually agrees. Later, the father finds the video tapes and punishes the elder daughter by beating her with the tapes. He then visits Christina’s flat and beats her for giving the tapes to his daughter.

With Christina now gone, the elder daughter replaces her in the role of providing sexual release for the eldest son. After having intercourse, she recites a passage from Rocky that suggests a desire to threaten her brother with violence if it ever happens again. We are also led to believe that the younger daughter has intercourse with her father.

The elder daughter plans her escape from the house. She first smashes her face with a dumbbell to knock one of her dogteeth out, and then she runs down the garden to hide in the boot of her father’s car. The father realises she’s missing and thinks she’s gone outside the fence. He conducts a quick search in the areas directly outside the fence, while the rest of the family stay just inside the grounds, barking like dogs on all fours.
