Five years after the events of the earlier film, Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) has assumed civilian life as a small town’s postmaster while Agent J (Will Smith) continues to work for the Men in Black, the self-funded New York City-based agency that secretly monitors and regulates extraterrestrials’ activity on Earth. J is largely without a partner, his former partner Agent L having returned to her former task as a deputy medical examiner and her successors having been expelled from the agency by J himself. While investigating a seemingly routine crime, J uncovers a diabolical plot by Serleena, a sadistic, shapeshifting Kylothian queen who disguises herself as a lingerie model, but resembles a Lernean hydra in her own form. To circumvent her plans, J must convince K — who has no memory of his time spent with the agency, but is the only person alive who knows what is needed to defeat Serleena — to reunite with the MIB before Earth is destroyed.
A large part of the plot centers on Agent J’s relationship with a woman called Laura Vasquez (Rosario Dawson), a waitress at a SoHo pizzeria who witnesses Serleena’s killing of the pizzeria’s owner. Rather than erase her memory according to MIB rules, J allows her to retain it. Read more

Men in Black II Trivia
- Famke Janssen was originally cast as Serleena, and even completed some of the filming, but was forced to drop out of the project due to a death in the family. Lara Flynn Boyle was then cast in her place.
- The original ending of the film included a scene in which the World Trade Center towers opened up, releasing a swarm of UFOs into the air. Following the towers’ destruction, the film’s ending was changed.
- The original pug from Men in Black (1997) was used to play Frank again, but since the pug was now seven years old, they used makeup to hide the gray fur around its nose.
- The locker which Agents J. and K. are led to has the number C18. That number also appears on a locker in Get Shorty (1995), also directed by Barry Sonnenfeld.
- You can see Edgar the Bug’s flying saucer (from the first film) on top of the roof of the restaurant where J takes Laura for a piece of pie.
- The steering mechanism in the car when flying near the ending scene is a silver-colored DualShock, the controller used for Sony’s Playstation and PS2 consoles. This leads to J’s joke about a “Gameboy”.
- Director Cameo: [Barry Sonnenfeld] The husband in the family watching TV when Jay, Kay and the Worm Dudes walk in to collect some guns.
- Cameos include: Tommy Lee Jones’ daughter (as the daughter in K’s old apartment) and Will Smith’s sons (the two boys who look up as J and K fly overhead).
- Cameo: [Rick Baker] Alien makeup effects master Rick Baker appears in the MIB Headquarters at the Alien Registration counter, his trademark hair gives him away.
- The little girl at the post office who wants to buy Rugrats stamps is Chloe Sonnenfeld, daughter of director Barry Sonnenfeld.
- Cameo: [John Andrew Berton Jr.] Film’s Special Effects supervisor appears as the split alien guy at the mail post.
- The hotel where the worms were staying was the Hotel Earle from Barton Fink (1991).
- When J and K go to the Worms’ apartment, they are speaking Huttesse to each other. Huttesse is the language of the hutts from the Star Wars films.
- When J & K are watching the Light of Zartha video in Newton’s room, J comments on the corny video, saying “Looks like Spielberg’s work”. The film’s executive producer is Steven Spielberg.
- During a scene in MIB headquarters, two aliens in black bodysuits can be seen walking around on all fours with their limbs straight, bobbing their heads up and down. The two aliens are played by Osseus Labyrint, an interpretive dance duo who toured with the band Tool and appeared in the band’s video for “Schism”. During the video, they perform the same move.
- When Agent J first “kills” Serleena and after a quick cut, Serleena grows back and says, “Feed Me.” This is a reference to the musical Little Shop of Horrors (1986).
- The stickers on Scrad’s/Charlie’s fridge door: “LOSER” “MY OTHER CAR – IS A SKATEBOARD – ALTERNATIVE PRESS” “HARASSING ME ABOUT MY SMOKING MAY BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH” “Your Kid’s An Honor Student – But You’re A Moron” “The Truth is NOT out There!” “BARTHAT – *SUCKS* – TIGERMASK – …” “NEW YORK – MAFIA” “Greetings from New York City” (on postcard showing a heist)
- Jay’s line on the “driver airbag” (“Actually it came with a black dude, but he kept getting pulled over.”) was not written in the script as Will Smith improvised it at the time. The producers liked it so much it even made the theatrical trailer. The Director however was not happy, it was played over and over in the month of June prior to the films release, making the joke old and tired by the time people saw it in the movie.
- In the final battle versus Serleena, J says, “I’m ’bout to lay the smackdown on your candy ass.” This phrase was coined by ‘The Rock (I)’ when he was a full-time professional wrestler.
- The extra head attached to Johnny Knoxville’s character is called a ‘symbiote,’ and was first developed in the Men In Black animated series. It is the only development of the animated series to be carried over into the movies.
- When Charlie faints at the MIB HQ you can see Martha Stewert on the big screen TV.
- The Worm Guys speak a similar language as Watto in StarWars (Episode I); Huttese. They say “Boota da nolia” and “Coona tee-tocky malia?” (What took you so long?) when Jay enters their room with Laura. Steven Spielberg always put these kind of easter-eggs in his movies as a tribute to George Lucas, and vice versa.
- The video store J and K visit has several Oliver Stone sections, and a large Oliver Stone cardboard figure near the check-out counter.
- The reason for the film’s brief running time was because the ending, which originally took place at The World Trade Center, had to be changed after the events of September 11th. When it was shown in theaters it was packed with trailers and the short film The Chubchubs (2002) to fill the time.
Men in Black II Mistake
- When MIB agents exit the lift to get into the main hall of the MIB Office, the lift opens halfway up the wall and they need to go down a little platform. But when K and J return during the lockdown and face the trashcan with guns, the lift opens at floor level, so it can be conveniently peppered with bullets.
- When agent Kay is in the elevator with the little worm dudes he swings down and starts shooting at the robot. When he swings down you can see the safety harness between his legs.
- When Frank the dog is growling at the agent in the park his teeth are fine but later talking to Zed he is told he can have better dental. He smiles and his teeth are horrible.
- When Jay enters the tent in which the small alien craft had landed we can clearly see the camera man in the golden reflection. This happens twice.
- In the scene at the lockers in Grand Central Station, Agent Kay takes his watch, an illuminated Hamilton digital, back from the little animals living there. In one shot, Agent Jay puts an analogue watch in the locker as a replacement, but in the next shot it is the same old Hamilton digital owned by Agent Jay. (This is mentioned in the DVD Audio Comentary with Barry Sonnefeld.)
- In the scene where Jay and Kay are talking in the mail truck, there is clear blue sky over the left shoulder of Jay. The camera turns to Kay for him to speak and when it goes back to Jay the sky over his left shoulder is cloudy.
- When Agents Jay and Kay are standing on the elevator overlooking MIB HQ when he brought Kay back, you can clearly see the leash (it’s a small black string on Jay’s finger) that Frank the dog is on in a couple of shots, then when they get off the string magically disappears.
- In the scene where Jay is fighting with Jarra, we see the clear rubber tubes in very back of the room. After defeating all the Jarras there is only six seconds left to stop the launch. He could not make it from the back of the room to the rocket in time to stop the launch.
- When Lara Flynn Boyle is holding up Tommy Lee Jones with her tentacles, in one shot you can see the tentacles coming out of her fingers, but when they show her up close, there are no tentacles coming out of her fingers.
- When Agents Jay and Kay are in the elevator avoiding the garbage can robot who is shooting at them, watch their hands – they move from the wall to the roof ledge for support as the camera angle changes.
- In the scene where Serleena confronts Zed in his office, look closely at her hands. Immediately after releasing Zed from her tentacles, her left hand now holds a box of Burger King fries, which disappear from shot to shot. This is most evident when she picks up the cellular phone, placing both empty hands on the desk first.
