A girl comes into Frank Leone’s auto shop asking for “a good mechanic.” The two embrace, then walk around town. Leone involves himself in a game of tackle football with some local sixth-graders before he and Melissa (Darlanne Fluegel) go their separate ways. Leone returns to a prison.

That night guards take Leone to a prison called Gateway Prison. He meets Warden Drumgoole, who claims that Leone will serve hard time. Leone was the only person to escape from Treadmore, and did so on Drumgoole’s watch. Leone escaped because Leone’s mentor and friend was dying, and Leone was refused even one hour to see him. Drumgoole’s treatment of prisoners was called into question, as Leone went to the press about it, resulting in the warden’s transfer to Gateway. The warden subjects Leone to the delousing chamber until he is forced to breathe in the powerful toxic elements.

Leone befriends Dallas (Tom Sizemore), Eclipse (Frank McRae) and First Base (Larry Romano). With the help of Dallas and First, Leone and Eclipse refurbish a Ford Mustang, which Eclipse nicknames “Maybelline”. After Leone reluctantly enables First to drive the Mustang out of the garage, the warden has Leone and the rest watch as two other inmates destroy the car. For six weeks Leone is confined to the hole, a small roach-infested chamber where every hour on the hour a light shines and he must state his name and prisoner number to a hidden camera.
