Doug Ireland is a young man who works as a concierge at the Bradbury, a luxurious hotel in New York City that is beginning to decline. Doug is very well-connected and is very good at his job, saving his clients such as Mr. Wegman (Michael Tucker) significant amounts of money while ensuring they have a good time. Doug’s dream is to open his own hotel on Roosevelt Island. He has saved every cent from his work and gotten an option on an old hotel there. But, he only has a few weeks to begin development on the hotel or else he will lose the option. He needs at least $3 million immediately, but his connections are not able to help him. His best chance to get the funds is Christian Hanover (Anthony Higgins), a somewhat unscrupulous billionaire.

While Hanover considers Doug’s proposal, he asks Doug to “take care” of his girlfriend, Andy Hart (Gabrielle Anwar), a beautiful model on whom Doug was personally interested (but who always rejected him, as she didn’t want to be two-timing her secret boyfriend Hanover). Doug pretends to be dating Andy so that she can get close to Hanover without his wife suspecting, while Doug also has to prevent Andy from creating a scene with Hanover’s wife, since Hanover has promised to get a divorce and marry Andy. Doug learns that Hanover is deceiving Andy but thinks that his hotel is more important and that Andy can make her own decisions, so he pretends that Hanover is being honest with her. However, as Doug and Andy spend more and more time together, and he explains his plans for his hotel and Hanover’s critical role in them to her, he questions his actions and concludes that he can no longer be part of this. They fight, and Andy and Hanover leave together.

As Hanover is en route to the airport with Andy to vacation in Europe, Doug chases after her to tell her about Hanover’s two-timing. Before he reaches them, though, Andy learns that the one of the documents that Hanover asked Doug to sign was intended to permit Hanover to take over the hotel project and force Doug out, and he explains to Andy that the project had too much potential for Hanover to share it with Doug. Andy abandons Hanover and heads back on foot, where she encounters Doug chasing after her. In the final sequence, we see that Doug and Andy have just married, when Doug gets a call from Mr. Wegman, who was sent Doug’s business plan by other members of the hotel staff (without Doug’s knowledge) and has decided to put up the $3 million that Doug needs to proceed with his hotel.
