A group of students are boarding a flight to Paris. But minutes before take off Alex Browning (Devon Sawa) has a premonition of the airliner exploding in mid-air. Panicking after events from his premonition begin to repeat themselves he is escorted of the plane. Soon after the plane explodes just as he foresaw. A ceremony is held weeks later. That night Todd Wagner (Chad Donella) a survivor of the crash and best friend to Alex is strangled in the tub by a clothes line. Alex doesn’t believe this is just a simple coincidence but that Death itself is killing those who were meant to die on the flight.
Alex then meets up with Clear Rivers (Ali Larter) a fellow survivor of the crash to discuss his theory at a local cafe. Carter Horton (Kerr Smith) decides to approach Alex who he spots at the cafe. But after the two have a minor argument Terry Chaney (Amanda Detmer), Carter’s girlfriend, storms off in anger and is hit by a speeding bus. Alex now completely convinced finds that the order the survivors of the crash will die in is determined by the order they sat in on the plane. Which means that next is Valerie Lewton (Kristen Cloke), a fellow teacher at Mount Abraham High School and survivor of the crash unless he can stop it.
He arrives at Valerie’s house soon after but Valerie believes Alex to be responsible for all the unexplainable occurrences, calls the cops on him. He is then brought into the station for questioning by Agent Waine and Agent Schreck (Daniel Roebuck) and(Roger Guenveur Smith). After explaining to the cops of what is occurring he is let go and returns to Valerie’s house but finds he is to late. He is later on approached by Clear, Carter, and Billy Hitchcock (Sean William Scott).But after refusing to tell Carter of who is next, Carter parks his car on rail road tracks, angered over having no control over his own death.
