The setting is the French Riviera. Bonjour Tristesse tells the story of Cécile (Jean Seberg), a decadent young girl who lives with her rich playboy father, Raymond (David Niven). When Anne (Deborah Kerr), Raymond’s old love interest, comes to Raymond’s villa, Cécile is afraid her way of life will be disrupted. Helped by Elsa (Mylène Demongeot), her father’s mistress, Cécile does her best to break up the relationship. Despite his promises of fidelity to Anne, Raymond cannot give up his lifestyle. The combination of the daughter’s disdain and the father’s rakishness drive Anne to suicide. Father and daughter continue pursuing their lavish but empty lifestyle. Read more
