The plot of the movie centers around the occurrence of a huge 10.5 Earthquake in Los Angeles (which destroys the entire city) triggers a massive tidal wave that destroyed most of Hawaii, and ancient fault lines throughout the entire continent becoming active once again, eventually resulting in an earthquake which creates a split in the midwest, starting in South Dakota, going through the entire continent of North America, and ending in the Gulf of Mexico, nearly destroying the nuclear plant in Red Plains, Texas; thereby splitting the United States and Canada in half.
